Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder that results in repeated breaks in breathing during the night. Often linked with snoring, sleep apnea typically occurs when the throat muscles relax and block your airway. Severe obstructive sleep apnea sufferers may experience hundreds of these “apneas” (airway blockages) each night. When an apnea occurs, a person will jolt awake to catch their breath and then fall back asleep. In the morning, most people don’t remember all the times they woke up during the night, but they may feel drowsy or tired during the day. Other common symptoms of sleep apnea include:

  • Loud snoring
  • Waking up with a sore throat and/or dry mouth
  • Problems paying attention
  • Headaches in the morning
  • Shortness of breath after an abrupt awakening

Sleep apnea, if left untreated, can affect your overall health. Some of the health disorders that have been linked to untreated sleep apnea include:

  • Stroke
  • High blood pressure
  • Depression
  • Diabetes
  • Heart failure
